Cold viruses are usually passed on by direct hand-to-hand contact with infected secretions or from contaminated surfaces. If a person with a cold virus coughs and covers their mouth with their hand, or touches their nose and then touches someone, or something else, then someone touches them or the object touched they can become infected with the virus. A cold virus can live on objects such as pens, books, telephones, computer keyboards, and coffee cups for several hours and can spread to others after contact with these objects.
