If the shoe fit wear it!

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Women especially love shoes. Millions of dollars are spent each year on shoes. We love them. If there is one item in our closet that we spend a little more money on it would be shoes. We want shoes that fit good and look great.

But did you know that ill fitting shoes can effect our health? We can cause ourselves some unneeded aches and pains all in the name of vanity. Ill fitting shoes can cause bad posture as well as cause muscle strain. A good fitting shoe is even more important if we intend to exercise.

There are some key factors in purchasing shoe that is good for you. First you want a shoe with a good foundation. It should be able to handle supporting your weight and activity. Second, it should fit your foot well. If your toes are scrunched up and your arch hurts at he end of the day, through those in the garbage.

From time to time our feet change, so the shoe that fits well last year may not fit as well this year. Shoes also stretch with time and conform to our bad walking habits, making them less effective. Each time you buy shoes you should have your feet measured for the best fit.

New Mental Illness law

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

New health insurance law to take action January 2010.   The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 says that health insurance companies must implememt the same benefits for mental illness and substance abuse as they do for any other illness.

Not all health insurance policy holders will benefit from this new law. there are limitations set forth. the law will only effect those with insurance that have more than 50 participants in it’s group. So if you have small group or individual insurance you will not benefit.

I would not expect any immediate changes for all policy holders, but I do believe that consumers will push for changes to match the law in all plans. I don’t think we would see the same changes, but possibly mental illness and substance abuse benefits that are a little more useable.

Since health insurance is consumer driven I would expect to see a carrier make some changes in the way of these benefits and in return see a trickle down effect happen. If one carrier makes some significant changes you can expect others to follow suit. It is a marketable selling point they will not ignore.

Many believe that the healthcare system is in need of much change. So this law is one very positive step in the right direction. It is a huge success for many lobbyist that believe much change is needed. I would expect to see many changes in the years to come.

Flu Outbreaks

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Many of those with out medical insurance suffer during the flu season.  Treatments, symptom releivers and time off work can hurt the pocket book.  Many do net get treatment at all and this can be risky.

The dreaded flu is among us all. There are widespread outbreaks in many areas. A Dallas school closed for 3 days in order to disinfect the school because 1/4 of the student body where out with the flu. Dallas county health officials have made reports that the flu was intense at this time in the Dallas area.

There are a few factors that experts think may have led to such an outbreak. The most recent outbreak in Dallas is resistant to the popular Tamiflu treatment. And frankly many people are struggling day to day and just do not have the money for medication, doctor visits or missed work.

Typical symptoms of the flu are high fever, tiredness, headaches, sore throat, coughing and body aches. Sometimes diarrhea and vomiting may occur. You should wash your hands regularly, use hand sanitizers and do not cough with out covering your mouth (not with your hand).

The flu can be very serious and become worse in a matter of days. History has shown that an outbreak can be serious and widespread. It also shows that the flu can be fatal. Complications could include pneumonia, sinus infection, ear infections and bronchitis.

If your health insurance needs have been meet you may want to look into home insurance.
